Karaga Festival

{om} {om} {om}Karaga Festival{om}{om}{om}

Karaga Festival that is one of the oldest festival of Karnataka that involves both the religion like Hindus and Muslims. Karaga is the festival of TIGALAS who are Tamil speaking community. The Tigalas, who hold Draupadi as per their foremost deity, trust that Draupadi Shakti (power) brims over during the Karaga Festival.

Arrangements for the Karaga Festival start 15 days previous to Chaitra Poornima by hoisting temple flag on bank of Sampangi Tank (which is located next to Kanteerava Stadium). Special Poojas are held on the sixth day, invoking Draupadi. On the seventh day, the Hasi Karaga (the karaga not sanctified) is formally brought from a salt-water pond nearby. This ritual has to with the legend of a Karaga carrier who once stood in a tank waist-high in water. When he was in a deep meditation when he felt the weight of an object in his hand. He carried it to the Sampangi tank and then to the Dharmaraya Temple where he placed it next to the deity Dharmaraya Swamy.

The Veerakumaras are recruited from the Tigala society three days before the festival. The chosen ones have to take Deeksha from the temple and remain pure and chaste till the Karaga Festival is over. On the ninth day, the temple location is in flames with a fire-walking ritual. The Veerakumaras, bearing their swords and ritually clad in Dhotis, hit the haggard blades against their bare chests even as they dance in fury around the bed of live coals before running over them.

It is believed that it is at this moment that the sanctified and decorated Karaga automatically positions itself on the head of the carrier, who is in isolation .As soon as these preliminary festivities start, the Karaga bearer confines himself to the temple premises, undertaking several preparatory rituals. He takes his bath at nine wells identified for the purpose and is on a diet of just milk and fruits. His arrival at the temple itself is solemn, when he is taken in a procession. As soon as he leaves his home, his wife assumes the role of a widow, and it is her husband who is wearing her Tali (holy necklace of Indian married women). She is not to set her eyes upon him until after the festival, after which the couple are reunited in marriage.
The Karaga route begins at the Dharmaraya Swamy Temple (which is located near Town Hall) and goes through the Old City via Cubbonpet, Ganigarapet, Avenue Road, Dodderpet, Akkipet, Balepet, Kilari Road, Nagarathpet and surrounding areas of K.R.Market. The Karaga carrier, now in his temporary avatar as Draupadi, goes to the houses of the Veerakumaras where their families perform Pooja to the Karaga. Before the procession returns to the main temple.
Karaga halts at the Dargah-e-Sharif of Hazrat Tawkal Mastan, the 18th century Muslim saint. The story goes that Mastan, on hearing that the Karaga was coming, rushed to meet it, but fell down and hurt himself mortally. When the priests revived him by applying kum kum (holy red thing) on his injuries, they healed instantly. An ecstatic Mastan invoked Draupadi's name and prayed that after his death the procession should halt at his Dargah (which is located in K.R.Market).
For the Karaga carrier, the swords have an alarming connotation because by tradition they are supposed to stab the Karaga carrier if he loses balance and falls. Auspiciously, this has never happened in the long history of this festival. This is not happened because I being a Tigala I’m also a one of Veerakumara, I believe our god Karaga like anything, luckily the above said didn’t happened from past my great grand father’s time.

A brief about Adishakti

A brief about Adishakti
Vanikula Kshatriya Tigalas are the people who devotee the Adishakti Draupadi Amman, and this are the people who are the prime communities in Karnataka. A nine days festival experiential by this Tigalas is KARAGA Festival in astonishment to the Goddess. This is the major festival not only to Tigalas the people who stay in Bangalore. You must know that the Karaga carrier is a man who is himself be a sign of Goddess Adishakti Draupadi Amman because of this reason he is adorned like a woman, the Karaga bearer leaves the Dharmaraya Temple around midnight adorned with yellow Saree, Bangles and also with Mangalasutra (holy necklace of Hindu religion)
The Goddess is brought for the Darshanam of the devotees from the temple on the head of the Karaga bearer. The crowd goes out of control trying to catch a glance of the goddess Draupadi.
From the early time the foremost temple for this Karaga Festival is Dharmaraya Swamy Temple. The noble Highness of Mysore visited this temple in December 1811 as per the records maintained by temple. The Thigala community people formed a temple trust comprising of Ganacharis, Gowdas, Gantepoojari, Poojari who look after the performance of the karaga festival every year. This Karaga Festival include “Hasi Karaga”, “Petai Karaga” (but this Petai Karaga is commonly known as “Hoovina Karaga”.
The festival is celebrated "Chaitra Poornima" (The Full Moon day in the month of Chaitra as per the Hindu Calender).
Two months previous to the festival, the members meet and converse about the details of the Karaga celebrations. After this community elders are invited to discuss and decide the intricacies of the festivities, the date and time it is to be performed. Arrangements are made for the printing of invitations and its distribution. Karaga is celebrated in different parts of Karnataka in places such as Hoskote, Shanthinagar, Anekallu, Maluru, Kolar, Vijayapura, Devanahalli and Yelahanka.
We can now see how Karaga originated and the birth of ADISHAKTI in the form of DRAUPADI. It is said that AdiShakti helped the Bramha, Vishnu and Shiva (usually known as Trimurthi’s) in the creation and existence.

Goddess Parvathi the Adishakti one day sees Lord Shiva deep in meditation. She prays to Lord Bhrama to grant her desire to attain Lord Shiva as her husband. Impressed by her dedicated prayer and meditation, Lord Bhrama appears before her.

On seeing Lord Bhrama, Parvathi says "Pathi Bhikshamdehi" (Lord, Bless me with a husband).Lord Bhrama is astounded into silence on seeing Parvathi aglow with power and magnificence due to her meditation.Seeing the Lord silent Parvathi repeats her request "Pathi Bhikshamdehi" four times over.

Lord Bhrama who was stunned into silence recovers himself and replies "Astu (so be it) to all your wishes".

Parvathi asks the Lord Bhrama "Lord, Why is it that when I asked for one boon but you blessed me saying "Let all your wishes be granted"".

Lord Bhrama replies "Mother, please remember that you asked for the same boon five times over".Hearing this reply Parvathi is stunned and askes Lord Bhrama for a solution.

Bhrama tells Parvathi that "Marital relations are for earthly beings and hence only for Earth.I have granted you your wish, now it is upto you to decide whether you want to spend Five Janmas (birth's) with five husbands or to accept the trials and tribulations of being the wife of five husbands in one Janma (birth) and then return to Devaloka (Heaven).

Parvathi replies "Instead of being away from the Lord's presence for five Janmas (birth's), I prefer one Janma (birth) with five husbands. But I want my husbands to be in the image of God and I want to be able to perform righteous tasks while I am on Earth. Lord Bhrama replies "Astu" (So be it) and leaves.

There after King Drupadha peforms a Yagnya. From the Yagnya fire, Adishakthi is born in the form of a baby girl and is named Draupadi. Later she marries the five Pandav brothers, Dharmaraya, Bheema, Arjuna, Sahadeva and Nakula and plays a key role in Mahabharatha and the recitation of the Bhagvad Gita.

Draupadi resided in the hearts of Pandavas and encouraged them to prepare for the mighty war of Kurukshetra inorder to re-establish dharma (righteousness) and justice.

Ethnic Roots, Karaga Festival, Historic Association in Bangalore,

***Ethnic Roots***

They considered to be ethnically Tamil and usually speak mixed languages both Kannada and Tamil. Some are bilingual and yet others are monolingual.

***Karaga Festival***

They are generally Hindus. Their main deity is Draupadi Amman and the Karaga festival celebrated in Kolar, Bangalore and other towns is mainly performed by people belonging to this caste. Especially the dance of the Karaga Carrier and that of the Veera Kumaras is eye catching and enthrilling.

Historic Association in Bangalore

Their caste associations (guilds) also have jointly built temples and manage them. Historically it is claimed that a local king Hyder Ali encouraged Tigalas to settle down in Bangalore to help in the laying out of Lal Bagh.

Tigalas are a sub caste of the numerous Vanniar caste of Tamil nadu and Southern Andhra Pradesh.

Prominent Tigalas in Bangalore city, India
Note:-There are so many prominent Thigalas in Bangalore as few are above.
